Load Bearing Vs Non Load Bearing
There are few places that allow for load bearing structures. In a nut shell, load bearing structures are built with minimal, if any, framing on the outside of the structure. So the roof sits directly on top of the bales without a framed support. In the case of non load bearing structures, a frame that will either be hidden in the bales or from inside the house is built. The picture to the right shows construction of a non load bearing house with a frame that will be visible from within the house even after plastering. Strawbale frames still require much less lumber than the typical framed houses because the post and beams are set wider apart.
