Home-Sustainable Building - SIPS
Structurally Insulated Panels (S.I.P.s) are a great alternative to frame type construction and design. The finished structure looks the same as a frame house but has twice the energy efficiency with the same wall thickness. It is also able to accept more traditional exterior finish methods such as siding, shingles, brick, etc.. Therefore this is a good alternative for people who don't like stucco finishes or other unconventional building methods such as strawbale or earthships. The building costs compare to traditional frame construction but as it is twice as efficient the maintenance casts are significantly lower. The systems consist of CFC free foam sandwiched between two layers of OSB with spline and corner systems utilizing top and bottom plates. It comes ready made with chases in for the electrical. The actual product costs are more, but it saves so much time in labor that the extra initial expense is more than recouped.
