Earthships

Earthship type construction as advocated by Dennis Weaver and Michael Reynolds is another great alternative construction method. Used tires are filled with earth and used to create a wall system.

One limitation to earthship designs is that it requires a south facing sloped lot because the tire wall is typically bermed into the north side and passive solar is utilized on the southern exposure.

Also earthship construction tends to be labor intensive. It is affordable if you have lots of time and free labor but can be expensive if you pay professionals to do it.
